As we come to a wrap for the Winter 2016 semester I would like to reflect back on some of the courses that have had a big impact on my experience. I transferred to U of M-Dearborn during the Winter 2014 semester and have had many classes that have made on impact. One of the classes is Marketing 363 which is the class I am currently taking and writing this blog for.
I came into this class not knowing anything about Digital Marketing and in hopes that this class would teach me information that would be valuable. I look at every class in the perspective of how am I going to transfer this knowledge to the workplace and implement it in my career. I quickly came to see the importance of having knowledge in Digital Marketing given that almost all companies are transitioning to doing more with technology. The traditional marketing function in companies has recently change drastically to incorporate more of a digital presence in the market. This is just one example of how digital marketing is effecting companies throughout the world. Within a few weeks of being in the MKT 363 class I noticed myself researching more about a Digital Marketing degree. Based on my research I put together a list of the best digital marketing courses 2016 which you can find on my blog or click here to access directly. Looking into a degree that has not been offered in the past can be overwhelming since there isn’t as much research or feedback out there. I wrote a blog on Best digital marketing courses 2016 and offered my advice to those just starting out in the Digital Marketing field.
I hope all of you who have read my blogs have found them helpful! I am glad to have taken this class because I have learned a lot about SEO. I am graduating in a week and could honestly say that my time at University of Michigan-Dearborn has been full of interesting classes that I have gain a lot of knowledge from.
I am going to be applying all the things I learned in the workplace and that is a nice feeling.
Thank you! 🙂
Being a part of this great organization on campus is an experience I won’t forget. The memories that you build with your AMA family are ones you will forever cherish. Here is story of my time as a member of AMA UMD!
I transferred to University of Michigan-Dearborn in the Winter 2014 semester. Soon I came to hear about the American Marketing Association but was afraid to join because I could not commit to extensive hours. I thought that AMA UMD was like most of the other organizations where you are required to put in a certain amount of hours volunteering in the community. I was taking five classes and working so I never approached the president or went to any of the meetings. Now I realize that was a big mistake on my part because if I would have reached out to any of the eboard members or attended a meeting I would have found out that this was exactly what I wanted to be apart of.
I joined AMA UMD a year ago and it is the best decision I have made at during my time at U of M-Dearborn. AMA UMD has allowed me to grow as a person and become more marketable. All majors are welcome to be apart of the organization so this allows for a cross collaboration between different background and perspectives. AMA UMD takes a trip to Chicago every year to visit well known companies to expose their members to the Digital Marketing Ad Agencies.
This year I was able to go to Chicago with AMA UMD and it was an eye opening experience. We visited three amazing companies.
- Leo Burnett
- Slack and Company
Leo Burnett Big Black Pencil
Slack & Company-Chicago
Leo Burnett– What an amazing company doing some great work around the world. The company was founded in 1935. Today the company has 85 offices around the world and 9,000+ employees. The company has many major clients all over the world. The people at the company like seeing themselves as not fitting in and they are comfortable with that because it allows for creative to surface.
Havas– Is an interesting company to say the least. They are amazing at what they do. The have talented people working for the company so they expect nothing less from their interns. The internship program with Havas put interns through a month long boot camp to see who succeed. The individuals who successfully complete the boot camp get considered for the internship.
Slack & Company– Never would I have thought that we would get to meet the owner himself! As we arrived he was walking casually through the office and warmly welcomed us inside of his company. Gary Slack’s title is Chief Experience Officer and his front desk clerk’s title is Director of First Impressions. This is one way that he makes his company relax and people who work there love their job.
This trip was one of my favorite memories of AMA UMD. AMA UMD hosted multiple events to help their members and fellow colleagues network with industry leaders.
AMA UMD is an organization that will allow you the flexibility to attend or get involved in as many events as you wish. You get out what you put in! I attended and helped with most events and was recognized as the person most likely to be at any AMA UMD event.
I encourage you to give AMA UMD a try. You will see that you will fall in love with the organizations. At AMA UMD you will build a family that you will have for many years to come! Check out AMA UMD’s website here if you are interested in joining!
I don’t know if you all are familiar with Google AdWords but for me it was the first time hearing about it when I started my Digital Marketing class at University of Michigan- Dearborn. Just a few weeks into the class and we were going through the keyword planner tool offered by Google AdWords. The keyword planner is a tool that is used to help businesses build a keyword list that will get the best results for the product or service that they are offering. This tool will give you an option to build your keyword list for specific locations and it should be noted that the result do vary between countries so you have to be careful when building your keyword list that you are under the location that you want your keywords to be related to. Another option that keyword planner offers you is the option to view only closely related ideas to your search terms or you can selected the option to view broadly related ideas (this is the option that is recommended to be used).
In my first few weeks of class we were given a Keyword Planner project that required us to build a keyword list for the whole line of products offered by Samsung in the United States and United Kingdom. This was not an easy task! With over 60+ products offered just in the United States and over 30+ products offered in United Kingdom it took quite some time to built a keyword list for each of the products with a few differentiation for each. The keyword lists for the two different markets differed quite a bit for example in the United States someone searching for a phone would search something along the line of the keyword ‘cellphone’ whereas in United Kingdom someone doing the same search would search instead for the keyword ‘mobile phone’.
Shifting gears to other services Google AdWords offers. Google AdWords offers a service that will allow you to identify keywords that you want to bid on. In addition you will be able to determine how much you want to spend and you can create groups of keywords that would be pared with your ads. Google will determine which ad is shown and where based on two key factors: your maximum bid and your quality score which equals to ad rank!
Google AdWords offers a lot of services and I would truly encourage all of you to go and explore these services so that you are more aware. These will allow you to be much more prepared for your career or allow you to be informed about the services so that you can apply it to your work.
For MKT 363 we went through the Google AdWords services. As we come to a close for the semester we are given the opportunity to become Google AdWords certified. In order to become certified you must take the AdWords Fundamentals exam and one of the other exams offered which are Search Advertising, Display Advertising, Video Advertising, Shopping Advertising, and Mobile Advertising. To pass the exams you need to score an 80%. But imagine how nice it will feel putting on your resume and LinkedIn profile that you are Google AdWords certified! Hope this post has helped you understand a snippet of what Google AdWords is about and what it offers!
Would love to hear your feedback comment or share this post!
